South Eastern View of King's House
Art Exhibition at King’s House
During the last month my attention has been on an invitation I received from the wife of the former Governor General, to participate in an art exhibition at King’s House on International Women’s Day, March 8, 2012. I’m honored to be invited as King’s House is held in high regard and I expect that many of Jamaica’s eminent artists have also been invited.
King’s House is the official residence of Governors General of Jamaica. There the head of State, the representative of the monarch of England resides during his tenure.
When the capital of Jamaica was changed from Spanish Town to Kingston in 1872, the Governor at that time, Sir John Peter Grant, who served as Governor from 1866 to 1874, chose Somerset Pen, now known as King’s House Lands, on which was located the traditional home of the Anglican Lord Bishop of the Diocese of Jamaica for forty-six years, to build the new King's House. It has been refurbished twice since then. The royal family and many other distinguished guests of Jamaica have been welcomed there.
As Jamaica is celebrating 50 years since being granted Independence in 1962, I want to bring out in my entries some of the cultural interests of Jamaica. So I will show the ‘Sunken Garden ‘Hope Gardens, memorable to many for its large lily ponds skirted by Grecian-like urns. Hope Botanical Gardens is a landmark in Kingston. ‘Coconut Shadows’ another painting for the show is a composition in abstract style of the coconut tree, majestic, popular in our songs and in many aspects of Jamaican life. Then ‘Philodendron High’ is a study of a popular creeping plant, which clings to other plants with its strong roots and large variegated leaves spread against solid tree trunks in our lush tropical vegetation.
This will be my first show for 2012 and I’m looking forward to it.
